This Austin Seven (7) Speedex style road/race car was originally conceived by coach builder Rod Yates as a racing austin seven (7). The body was inspired by the successful Goodacre Cup winning Speedex, marketed by Jem Marshall, later of Marcos fame. Due to the pressure of work commitments, the detail, design and construction was sub contracted to Pigsty Racing. Pigsty craftsman, James Gordon, has an original Speedex .
The car features a stressed skin tub in NS4 alloy married to a modified Pigsty/Austin chassis. The seats are mounted in the undertray, positioning the driver lower to the ground. This was to lower the overall centre of gravity and improve handling.
The rear springs are mounted low on the axle whilst the front spring is mounted under it's axle for improved stability. The chassis cross members are between the side members.
The beautiful, compound curved, front cowl and the bonnet where crafted by Rod Yates
The all important brakes are cable operated, a recent Pigsty innovation inspired by Bugatti who pioneered the practice. The current owner reports that they are excellent.
Although the car is still suitable for race use with some minor adjustment, the current owner has adapted the car for road use by increasing the ground clearance, adding wings and lights, a charging circuit and full instrumentation. This work has been completed to a very high standard.
The tuned engine has a Phoenix crankshaft, driving through a close raratio synchromesh gearbox providing the motive power, and plenty of it!
